Business Studies

This is a growing department and a popular option choice for students at GCSE and A-Level. We welcome students with a real capacity for analysis and evaluation and strong literacy and numeracy skills. Both GCSE and A-Level courses focus on building logical arguments for achieving specific business decisions, based on knowledge and evidence from case studies or live business situations. Students must be prepared to present, debate and justify their ideas, both verbally and in written reports.

All students are encouraged to study and research real business organisations and, to facilitate this, several trips and visits are arranged throughout the year.  Recent visits have included the assembly line at Vauxhall Motors in Luton, the Heineken Brewery in Amsterdam, Thorpe Park and trips to a number of businesses local to Bedford, such as Aircraft Research Association. Students studying GCSE Applied Business must also choose a local and a national business to visit as part of their extended coursework project.

We also encourage active participation in business competitions and workshops. We take part in the successful Young Enterprise programme, the accountancy BASE challenge and the Cranfield University Business Challenge Game.

The Business Studies department consists of three members of staff – Ms McAloone, Head of Department, Mr MacLennan and Mr Baker.  The Department is equipped with two computer suites, each with interactive Smart Boards, and some portable wireless laptops.

The year 12 Business Studies group this year entered the Cranfield University Business Challenge Game and came out on top, winning the competition over 24 other teams from Bedfordshire schools.
