Physical Education at Mark Rutherford

The Physical Education department consists of 8 full-time members of staff who deliver lessons in all aspects of the subject; a range of sports are delivered within core lessons, whilst also offering various examination level courses. In addition to this, there is an extensive extra-curricular programme available to all year groups throughout the year.

COURSES

Key Stage 3 and 4 Core Physical Education
All students from years 7 to 11 follow a diverse range of sports which meets the demands of the national curriculum. All students complete termly units of activity which includes 2 different sports across the 4 lessons per fortnight, allowing students to cover up to 12 different activities per year.

Key Stage 4 Option Choices
In year 10 students are able to opt to study an additional PE or Sports qualification. Both Edexcel courses are completed over 2 years with students being timetabled for 5 additional lessons per fortnight in addition to core PE lessons.

  • GCSE Physical Education - GCSE PE lessons will be theory based with some elements of practical activity covered at appropriate times throughout the two year. During the course you will complete two components of work, the theory topics include: anatomy and physiology, movement analysis, physical training, health and fitness, sport psychology and socio-cultural influences, these topics are assessed via two exam papers which are completed at the end of Year 11. In addition, you will be assessed on your practical ability in three different sports and you will be expected to spend time improving your sporting ability within your core PE lessons and at extra-curricular clubs.
  • BTEC Level 2 Award in Sport – BTEC Sport lessons will be theory based with elements of practical activity. The course will equip individuals with the knowledge, understanding and practical skills required for success in current and future employment in sport and related industries. In particular, it prepares learners for employment in the sport sector that requires a specialist sport and exercise science grounding, at junior/assistant role.

In year 12 students are able to opt to study a PE or Sports qualification. Both Edexcel courses are completed over 2 years with students being timetabled for 9 lessons per fortnight.

  • A Level Physical Education allows pupils to delve deeper into the role of physical activity as part of a healthy, active lifestyle. It also allows pupils to assess their levels of performance and devise ways of improving both their techniques and performance levels.
  • BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sport and Exercise Science - is designed to enable students to gain both academic and practical experience and become competent in areas that are directly related to the workplace. This course allows you to develop skills in a sport science environment, and apply key analysis within practical sport performance. It provides progression opportunities into vocationally relevant employment or higher education. An extended diploma is studied over two years, has both internal (coursework) and external (examinations) assessments and is equivalent to 3 A-Levels.
